New Rowers – Fall 2025

The following information is for new rowers (novice*). All registered participants will be sent emails to their school accounts by the coaches in early August about the season and what to expect.

*Novice rowers are new to the sport – they are often freshmen, but could be from any class at CRLS.

Novice Pre-Season Practice Schedule
All practices are 10 am – 12 pm at Cambridge Boat Club (CBC) unless otherwise noted
Monday, August 25 – Orientation to team and equipment at CBC
Tuesday, August 26 – Barge at CBC
Wednesday, August 27 – Swim test and Safety Video at CRLS*
Thursday, August 28 – 1:30 – 3:30 pm. 8+s rowing at CBC

Novices are strongly urged to attend Pre-Season to learn about the team, the sport, and the procedures for practice but you will not be penalized if you are unable to attend.  If you are a returning rower, and have at least one season of participation with CRLS, you are expected to attend the Varsity pre-season which will meet at regular practice times starting August 18th.

All interested participants must complete and/or comply with the following  items BEFORE the season begins. If ANY of these are not completed, the athlete will be sent home immediately and not allowed to return until everything is in order.

1) Maintain excellent Academic Standing

  • Take a full course load of four classes
  • Pass at least three of four 10-credit letter graded courses and earned a GPA of 70 or higher on the most recent report card
  • You must receive passing grades in English, Physical Education, or Dance, if enrolled

2) Parent/Guardian registers you with CPSD Athletics 

  • Select either “Crew (Girls)” or “Crew (Boys)” regardless of Varsity or Novice
  • Parental permission, agreement to participate, agreement to the handbook
  • Understanding of the Hazing, Bullying, and Chemical Health rules

3) Submit the following documentation to the Athletics Office  via email addressed to cpsathletics@cpsd.us.

  • Proof of Sports Physical Exam (good for 13 months)
  • Proof of Covid vaccination
  • Concussion Course certificates from the athlete (good for 1 academic year)
  • Implicit Bias Course certificate from the athlete (good for 1 academic year)

4) Pass a Swim Test (good for 4 years)

  • Administered by the team at the start of every season usually at War Memorial Pool.
  • Swim 100 yards in a competent manner and remain afloat for 15 minutes unassisted
  • Fulfills the swimming graduation requirement

5) Take the ImPACT Test (good for 2 years)

  • Computerized baseline concussion test given to athletes at the beginning of the season; details provided each season for anyone needing it.
  • Please note: This test is emailed to the STUDENT EMAIL following registration with CPSD Athletics
