CRLS Crew: Novice Scrimmage vs Arlington Belmont and BUA Saturday September 27

Announcements, Novice

Hello Novice Athletes and Families!

We have an unexpected invite to scrimmage with Arlington Belmont (AB) and Boston University Academy this Saturday, September 27 at Spy Pond in Arlington.  We do not have to bring equipment, AB will be providing boats and oars.

Please note: Novice rowers will NOT be rowing at the Textile Regatta next weekend.Coaches will do their best to put as many athletes in races but we have to make the numbers of seats work with our competition. If 16 kids show up on time, we can only use 14 for an eight and a four and there will be 2 observers. This is a great opportunity to see your athlete in action!

ATHLETE TRAVEL (MAP ATTACHED BELOW)
Athletes need to arrive at Spy Pond by 8 am Saturday morning 9/27. Racing will commence at 9am. Spy Pond and the AB Boat Cage are right on the Minuteman Bikeway, a bit more than a mile from Alewife Station. Bike riders can ride there and athletes can also take the T to Alewife and catch the 350 bus which goes up Massachusetts Ave. They should get off at Franklin St (8 stops after Alewife.)

ATHLETE LOGISTICS
• Send your coach a note if you are coming just as a supporter, not a competitor (several have told Coaches they can only attend briefly and we want to make sure we have enough butts in seats with which to compete). Coaches will do their best to get everyone into a boat BUT they have to make the numbers work.
• THIS IS A WET LAUNCH!  There is no dock. Athletes have to wade into the water so they need to wear water shoes, crocs, sandals, etc. Then they will get into the boat by pairs and THEN put on their socks to row.
• Bring water bottles.
• Dress for the weather – it should be sunny and mild. Layers!

SPECTATOR LOGISTICS
Spectators are welcome and encouraged. On Google maps, it’s Spy Pond Boat launch next to Spy Pond Playground. There is a very nice park along the bike path which hugs the Pond shoreline so pretty good viewing of the action. NOTE: the AB “boathouse” or cage is away from the water along Pond lane. Head to the Spy Pond Boat launch!
• Each heat will be 1 vs 1. The first 1k will be raced, then, after the boats spin and catch their breaths (3 minutes), a rematch in the opposite direction.
• Map attached below.

Parking: There is some parking near the boat ramp. There is additional parking near the Arlington Boys and Girls Club.

RACE OPS AND FOOD
A small CRLS tent will be set up near the boat ramp OR the picnic tables. Pre-race fruit/fruit snacks and/or post race donuts will be served.

Carroll and Amy (Race Ops Co-chairs) will be emailing the Regatta and Race Ops Committee about support. However, as this is last minute, we could use additional help. Please email: regattacrlscrew@gmail.com if you can assist and thanks in advance.

We sincerely appreciate all Novice families supporting their athletes in this exciting (and local) opportunity! Special thanks to the Coaches for getting it organized and we’ll see you on Saturday! Please let us know if there are any questions or concerns.
